Scary Stories About Contaminants in Water
Author: David CassellIf you like being scared, you'll love the stories below. (Warning: for mature readers only.) One drinking water contaminant that prompts special concern is the parasite. Parasitic microorganisms have caused more waterborne disease in America than any other microbe. In 1993, there was an outbreak of such a disease in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, caused by an attack of the parasite Cryptosporidium. About five-hundred thousand people got violently sick and about one hundred of them died. Some states, like California, recycle sewer water into drinking water when they face water shortages (and California is looking at some major water shortages over the next several years). A major beer company in Los Angeles even sued the state to stop them from doing this. This company was looking at potentially declining sales because rumors were going around that they made their beer out of sewer water. The nonprofit Environmental Working Group took a look at the drinking water of twenty-nine different American cities in the 1990's. One of the things it wanted to find out was how many of these twenty-nine cities had pesticides in their drinking water. The answer? All twenty-nine. And the title of the report they eventually published? "Weed Killers by the Glass." (It would also make a good horror movie title.) Americans have seen outbreaks of diseases caused by cysts in drinking water before, notably in 1933 at the Chicago Exposition and in 1950 at Indiana's Singer Sewing Machine Plant. Well, the cyst is back. It's estimated that at least five percent of Americans could get a cyst-related infection in the near future.
